Mammoth Site

The Mammoth site in Hot Springs SD was a sink hole with steep sides and a fringe of enticing green vegetation at water's edge. Once a large animal fell in, it was impossible to climb back out. Thus a whole lot of bones in a very small area. The biggest mammals trapped here were the Columbian and Wooly Mammoths. To date, over sixty mammoths have been exposed. All male.

Digging is on-going.

Columbian Mammoth teeth.
Wooly mammoth teeth are more rounded.

Imagine killing one of these giants with a spear.

Wooly Mammoth

Jumble of bones.
