Hueco Tanks

Serenity made a perfect entry into Texas, her gas tank was empty and gas was $2.10 gal.

Several years ago I read about a very interesting pictograph at Hueco Tanks State Park. I had no reservations, but dropped by and scored a site for the night.

These rock formations were created 34-38 million years ago when a plume of magma rose toward the surface only to be stopped by a layer of limestone, the remnant of an ancient sea bed. Over millions of years the limestone cap was eroded away revealing the much harder igneous rock.

In 1898 Silverio Escontrias built this small adobe home here and began ranching. He and his wife raised 11 children and lived here until 1956.

But the Escontrias family were Johnny come lately interlopers. 10,000 years ago this was a wetter, lusher environment when the first Paleo Indians settled the area.

The park offers a ranger lead hike to view some of the pictographs.

Nicole explaining the 11-12 inch deep mortar holes. How many generations of paleo women sat here grounding Mesquite beans to create holes this deep?

Early settlers scratched their names right over timeless red ocher pictographs.

This is one of the ponds that fills with water during the wet season. Hueco is Spanish for hollows. Hueco Tanks refers to the multitude of water holding depressions in the borders and rock faces. There is always water available here for the rich assortment of wildlife living here.

It is amazing that the pigments the Paleo Indians used have lasted for thousands of years.

This is the pictograph I came to see.

It is so unique. I have seen hundreds of pictographs and petroglyphs, but nothing like this. Nicole thinks the rare green pigment was created from turquoise.

Las Cruces

There is a very nice rest stop that sits on a bluff overlooking town. I spent two nights here while exploring Las Cruces. It is large and frequented by truckers, but I did not have any problem getting a good nights sleep.

A large Roadrunner art installation at the rest stop. I appears to be fabricated from scrap and salvage materials

And I saw a live Roadrunner right outside my rig.

On Saturday I explored the Famers Market. It stretches for a third of mile along Main St. There was a smattering of farm produce and an abundance of arts and crafts.

Very nice invalided boxes

It was struggle, but I passed by avoiding temptation.

Sandy created these lovely gourds

The people of New Mexico are in love with chilies. When you order food, the first question the waiter asks is "red or green". They put chilies on almost everything.

Learning your ABCs

But wait. There's more.

At 11 the Veteran's Parade came marching up the street.

This one is for you Cliff

Aggie marching band

Local gymnastics club

Old rusty, but running stuff.

  Don't Stop Now

I heard some music and wandered into the Las Cruces International Mariachi Conference.

I love the colorful dresses.

Hot Well Dunes

I made a short hop over to Hot Well Dunes. There are 2,000 acres of sand dunes here. The remnants of a beach that surrounded a lake two million years ago. The hot well was discovered in 1928 by oil drillers. In addition to the hot tubs this a huge OHV area and  can be quite rowdy on the weekends. Best time to visit is mid-week.

There are two identical hot tubs here.

Solar powered pumps supply a continuous flow of hot water.

What a find. The water is about 105 degrees, perfect.

Old sol and storm clouds created quite a show tonight.

Drifting South

The weather made me do it. The night before I departed Carson City, Serenity's plumbing survived a 20 degree night. The forecast for the following night was 10 degrees. I decided not to push my luck, said goodby to my friend Cliff and headed south.
Out of Nevada I choose an old surviving section of historic route 66 from Kingman to Ash Fork.

It was a beautiful back road with limited traffic and no trucks.

My travel plan was to go through Flagstaff to Holbrook on the truck infested interstate. At Holbrook I would again traverse the quite back roads to Roswell, NM

I found a nice quite over night spot on route 66

Plans change. My morning hygiene routine was squashed by frozen water pipes. Not a drop was to be had. *^%^&*I*  When I reached Ash Fork I turned due south and didn't stop until I was southeast of Phoenix. Luckily Serenity's pipes were not damaged.

Heading toward Glob on hwy 60

Great little spot if you don't count the 3.5 mile washboard road. This is Cluff Ranch pond 3. I had planned to spend a few days here, but only spent one night because there is no cell signal.

A great spot above Stafford with a cell signal.
