These prolific fossil beds were discovered by Earl Douglass in 1909. He and his crew collected thousands of fossils that were shipped by to the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. The area was proclaimed a National Monument in 1915
This is the quarry wall that Douglass discovered. Only the very top layer of this layer was sticking out of the hill top. The side of the hill was removed to expose this fossil rich layer.
